Giveaways and a New Record Collection

Last week I announced that I am giving away a 4-day pass to Roots Tech 2020. If you will be in Salt Lake City (or are willing to travel) February 26-29, 2020, head to this post to see all the details about entering. Roots Tech is an amazing conference, and this year marks its tenth anniversary. The Roots Tech team is planning for a very special event. I’m looking forward to it, and I’m especially excited to be attending as an Ambassador this year!

Did you have a chance to read the articles in my series “Tracing Your Immigrant Ancestors?” In Part 1, I explored Naturalization Records. Part 2 was all about passenger lists. Last week I published Part 3, in which I talked about how to discover your immigrant ancestor’s place of origin and shared the story of finding Michael Kunch’s birth village of Ozenna, Galicia (now a part of Poland).

When writing about passenger lists, I discovered a browse-only collection at FamilySearch called “Register of Vessels Arriving at the Port of New York from Foreign Ports.” I was really excited about this collection because my current project involves trying to discover records documenting a young man’s journey from New York to Australia in the 1850’s. Family lore states that the young man traveled on a private ship with his uncle. I have hypothesized that the uncle is William T. Dugan, a shipping merchant from Brooklyn. I was able to find a ship called the W. T. Dugan, in quite a few entries in these records during the 1850’s. I am now researching shipping routes to see if any of the ports the W. T. Dugan arrived from would be a stop en route from Australia. It’s exciting to discover new records that might help solve a family history mystery.

I also added a few blog posts at Souls to Bless last week. In “How a Consultant Can Know Everything Part 5,” I shared one of my favorite ways to learn more about family history – webinars, podcasts, and YouTube. I gave recommendations for some of my favorites in each category. What are your favorites?

In my post “Discover the Story of YOU at RootsTech 2020,” I talked about the resources for family history consultants that are offered at RootsTech and offered several options for attending.

I am excited about the next few weeks! Stay tuned for some fun things that I have in the works, including another exciting giveaway!
